One evening the fam and I were entertaining some dear friends at our home. We were playing a game we have affectionately renamed, or re-pronounced Sa-Quan-Sey! It’s actually called Sequence, but we “extra” so… If you are familiar, this is a game of strategy to get a sequence of 5 chips all in one row. You can play as an individual against your opponents or if you have more players can play teams. One of the rules of the game does not allow talking across the board to your teammates. Everyone has to be paying attention to the moves each one makes to see where to make the next best move. You can block and remove your opponents chips, so you must be watching. When playing teams, once there are two row sequences that team wins! So there we were playing along and it was my turn. I wanted desperately for my team to see what I was doing so they would not miss the opportunity my move provided, and since no talking or pointing out the obvious moves, I did the next best thing. I tried to sneak and under my breath, and sing in the late great Aaliyah, Rock The Boat fashion, ‘Work wit’ it’! No sneak, busted! My girl on the other team, was like “really”? Everyone erupted in laughter, as they called me out for trying to be clever… Hey we had taken a couple “L’s”, I had to do something!!
In this moment we were just playing a game and having fun. In life isn’t it true that sometimes you are put in situations, that you have to learn how to quietly tell yourself to ‘Work wit’ it’! There are days that one unforeseen thing can happen and cause us the need to re-strategize our next move. Life isn’t guaranteed to move in our preferred sequence. Oddly enough when we are faced with a moment like this, that seems to throw us off target, or away from what we perceive as the path we were so easily traveling, we tend to get all discombobulated for a minute or more. But I have found, after experiencing a handful of out of sequence situations in my life, they were actually right on target. I had to perceive them under the right mind position, which usually came after a sequence of a few more life moves, then I could see aaaahhhh, this didn’t throw me off. It actually propelled me into a different and more pertinent direction! A life strategy beyond my control, but under divine control.
When the option presents itself to ‘Work wit’ it’ I’m not suggesting that we don’t pause for a min to allow for processing of the shift. Whatever it is, we always need to process, gather ourselves, plant our feet and steady ourselves for the next move. We simply need to be sure we don’t get paralyzed there. Our teammates are counting on our ability to adjust and keep going. Teammates can be our children, husband or wife, mom, dad, siblings, a friend, or coworker, our community. Whomever is in your life to whom you have responsibility, is counting on you to be able at some point to readjust so that you can be ready to make the next move! The great thing is that being taken out of our chosen perceived sequence, does not have to completely derail our path. We may even get to create a different and usually more relevant to who we are becoming, way to move. Nothing in our lives says divine appointment or assignment like a unexpected shift in circumstances. So let’s do our best after the processing, to find our way to make it work, and Work wit’ it!
You got this. It’s not necessarily a set back. It could be a set up for the win up ahead! -Shaherah
Prayer: God thank you for your divine wisdom and detailed orchestration of my life. Help me to always be able to adapt, overcome, and improvise when my path gets re-routed. Make the tools I need to work with any situation that presents, clear. I know I may not always understand why, but I want to be able to accept the pertinent intervention, from your loving all knowing hands. Amen.
